My blog gets the OccasionWise calendar

Well, the OccasionWise Calendar gets better and better every day… it has now gotten to the point where I can now put together a WordPress plugin…

If you still don’t know what I am going on about… check my sidebar – go on, click it… ya know ya want to!

I have already briefly blogged about my involvement with OccasionWise in a previous post and for anyone wanting to use it in their own web site or blog, you just have to embed a few lines of JavaScript into your pages or just wait around for me to complete writing the WordPress plugin.

My OccasionWise Calendar currently displays feeds from 7 WordPress blogs and will include feed sources from other locations at a later date.

So …are you OccasionWise? …no? then – Get OccasionWise!

Thanks to my friend Jonathon for forwarding me this e-mail – Just too funny when you spot it…

Im not going to blog the answer… if you can’t see what’s so funny, then look harder!

(hint: No its nothing to do with the electrical cables on the chair – but do look higher and to the left)

OccasionWise

Over the past few months, I have been working on my OccasionWise project, and finally I can say that it is in a usable state!

OccasionWise is all about Occasions, Events and Observances and supplies its users with a funky calendar for use on their Facebook profile, blogs and websites.

The OccasionWise Team

  • Martin ‘Deadpan110‘ Guppy (Thats me)
    • Project Lead
    • Site Designer
  • Renee ‘Gurgi.Girl‘ Walker (My lover)
    • Data Entry
    • Ideas and Communications
  • Daniel ‘Fremen‘ Llewellyn (My good friend)
    • Core API designer
    • Idea to ‘work in practice’ expert

We still have a long way to go… our shop is not yet online and the calendar has a lot of entries still needing to be added… BUT our API is looking very promising and will soon be able to do things that we didn’t think of when we put the 1st working version together…

CSS Naked Day

Well the 9th of April 2008 sees the 3rd ever CSS Naked day – so my site has gone naked!.
screenshot-wwwdeadpan110com-mozilla-firefox.png

The idea behind this event is to promote Web Standards. Plain and simple. This includes proper use of (x)html, semantic markup, a good hierarchy structure, and of course, a good ‘ol play on words. It’s time to show off your <body>.

Dustin Diaz wanted to give the web world an opportunity to remind everyone of the benefits of CSS web page design. By removing the stylesheet for the day, the world would see naked web pages, giving a little more appreciation for the skills of web page designers.

Earthquake in England

After surviving an English earthquake myself (Dudley, West Midlands Earthquake – 23rd September 2002 – measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale) and hearing about recent English earthquake (Market Rasen, Lincolnshire Earthquake – 27th February 2008 – measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale), I had to smile about an email I received from a friend of mine.

Did you feel that earthquake last week?

It’s scary to think that with all the news on TV lately about extreme weather conditions affecting the east coast of the USA, mud slides in the far East and South America and now here in England we’re getting our fair share of natural disasters too. I’ve attached a photo showing the damage caused to a friend’s home from the earth quake last night. It really makes you cherish what you have and reminds us not to take things for granted.

I hope the people that it actually effected keep their British sense of humour and can look back on these events and smile.

Jamie and the Magic Torch

I used to love this cartoon when I was younger and found it and many more on Cartoon Decades 80′s Cartoons site.

Jamie and his dog Wordsworth used their magic torch in Cuckoo Land, and came across characters such as Mr Boo, Strumpers Plunkett and Officer Gotcha.

Written and Narrated by Brian Trueman

Jamie and the Magic Torch (1976 – 1978) was Produced by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall of Cosgrove/Hall Productions Ltd (Cosgrove Hall Films) who’s earliest production was ‘Noddy’(1975), and other productions include ‘Chorlton and the Wheelies’ (1976), ‘Cockleshell Bay’ (1980), ‘Danger Mouse’ (1981), ‘The Wind in the Willows’ (1983) and ‘Count Duckula’ (1988).

The animation studio based in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester has also produced the classic Roald Dahl story, ‘The BFG’ (1989) and also journeying through the wonderful world of Terry Pratchett, with two ‘Discworld’ films(1996).

Most people I have asked if they remembered Jamie and the Magic Torch usually reply with a ‘No!’, but no doubt they would recognise a few other animations from the same producers.

No doubt many of you reading this will end up following the link to the Cartoon Decades site to search for your childhood favorites.

Feed my frog

Feed my frog... he likes to eat flies... whaddya mean you cant see the Flash? ...If you are on my blog, then go visit the full page by clicking "Read the rest of 'Feed my frog' »"... If you are already on that page, then it looks like you are missing Flash...

While looking around on the mighty Google, I came across their Google Gadgets pages and found this cute lil frog created by aBowman.com.

For those that don’t know, I have always liked frogs (just ask my mum!) and I usually incorporate one into a few of my website designs.

Ever since I was a young boy many moons ago, I have always had a fascination for those lil amphibious creatures – from trying to protect and breed them in my parents back garden to getting one tattooed on my chest during May 2006 in Newtown by Gavin Steele.

Taken from a previous post ‘…a pair of frogs

This lil fella is superb… he follows your mouse pointer and you can feed him flies just by clicking within his window…

I spent some time trying to incorporate him into my website as I wanted him crawling around on every page underneath the text and above my background images, but unfortunately due to the very nature of embedding flash into websites means that it proved quite impossible (another web designers nightmare because flash is z-index infinity in some browsers CSS).

…So for now… visit other creations by aBowman.com (the Turtle, Fish and Spider are superb :) ) – Enjoy!

WordPress Database Cache

After spending a while looking into caching methods on WordPress, I have started work on a way to reduce database server load.

Most caching methods for WordPress involve creating static (Wp-Cache) or semi-static (Staticize Reloaded) pages and these are very good at reducing web and database load but are very quirky on sites with a lot of dynamic content.

Although the database cache does not reduce web server load, it does reduce the amount of queries sent to the database server.

At the time of this posting, my home page performs 79 queries to the database server.

With database caching enabled, 67 queries were retrieved from the cache and only 12 queries were made to the database server.

Even with the cache timeout set to the minimum of 1 hour, the load on a database server can be dramatically reduced on busy sites.

The WordPress database class (WPDB) is a modified version of an earlier release of ezSQL and can be easily replaced by creating your own database class in ./wp-content/db.php which is the same method the WordPress site uses for its HyperDB.

HyperDB is a replacement for the standard WPDB class which adds the ability to use multiple databases.

The cache I have created just drops into the wp-content directory and extends the current version of ezSQL for use with WordPress.

Features

  • Uses the cache feature within ezSQL
  • No caching of WordPress options, admin pages or previews
  • No caching of any SQL that makes use of RAND
  • Cache timeout can be set to a minimum of 1 hour (default)
  • In case of emergency, the cache can be switched off or even made to revert back to the WordPress default wpdb class from within wp-config.php

The script and documentation will be available soon – watch this space…

In the mean time, you can see the cache statistics at the bottom of these pages.

Update

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008 – The project pages for this post are available in the ezCache section.
